PayDay stands out from almost every other American candy bar because it skips chocolate altogether, which is exactly why it keeps coming up as a specific, named search.
A peanut bar built without chocolate
PayDay was first made in 1932 by the Hollywood Candy Company, credited to Frank Martoccio, a Minnesota macaroni and candy manufacturer. The original bar is salted peanuts rolled over a nougat-like sweet caramel centre, with no chocolate coating. During the Great Depression it was marketed as a dense, filling snack, almost a meal-replacement, which is part of why the peanut layer is so prominent.
Where it's made now
PayDay changed hands between several confectionery companies over the decades, including Leaf, Inc., before Hershey took over production; Hershey has made the classic peanut-covered bar at its Robinson, Illinois plant since 1996. Hershey also added a permanent chocolate-covered version, Chocolatey PayDay, in 2020, alongside the original.
What we actually stock
We don't currently stock PayDay. If you're after an American peanut-based bar, we do stock Reese's Peanut Butter Milk Chocolate Flavour Bar 90g and Reese's Fast Break Bar — both built around peanut flavour, though unlike PayDay, both use chocolate.
