Most lollipops commit to one flavour. The Double Lolly has been quietly doing two at once since the 1950s, which makes it one of the older ideas in the entire Swizzels range rather than a recent novelty format.
From a London jelly-sweet factory to a 1954 lolly
Swizzels began in 1928, when brothers Alfred and Maurice Matlow launched Matlow Bros. Ltd, making jelly sweets in a small factory in London. The company — later known as Swizzels Matlow, and now based in New Romney, Kent — introduced Double Lollies in 1954, describing it on its own company history timeline as the first double-flavoured sherbet lolly it produced.
Two flavours, one lolly
The idea is simple and hasn't really needed updating since: two different fruit sherbet flavours are set into a single lollipop, divided down the middle, so you genuinely get two distinct tastes from one sweet rather than a single blended flavour. It's a format Swizzels has kept running alongside its better-known sherbet products like Double Dip and Drumstick, rather than retiring it as those ranges expanded.
