Dime to Daim: The Name Change
The bar was developed in the 1950s by Marabou, the Swedish chocolate manufacturer, after the company's vice president tried and failed to license an American recipe and instead built its own version from a list of ingredients, testing it successfully in Stockholm in 1952. The name "Dime" was originally a phonetic Norwegian nod to the US ten-cent coin. Most countries adopted the "Daim" spelling in 1990, but the UK and Ireland kept selling it as Dime for another fifteen years, only switching to Daim in 2005 to bring British and Irish packaging in line with the rest of the world. Marabou itself was bought by Kraft in 1993, and the bar passed to Mondelez International when Kraft spun off its snacks division in 2012 — Mondelez still owns it today.
