Standard play allows up to 5 Pokémon on the Bench alongside the 1 Active Pokémon, for a maximum of 6 Pokémon in play at once. That's a firm limit, not a soft guideline.
What happens when the Bench is full
If the Bench already holds 5 Pokémon, a new Basic simply can't be played until a slot frees up, typically through a knockout removing a Pokémon from play. This creates real decisions about which Pokémon are worth keeping benched versus which should be evolved or sacrificed for space.
