Aberfoyle's tidy main street and surrounding hills hide a slate industry that once supplied some unlikely corners of the world.
The third largest slate source in Scotland
Quarrying began here before 1810, and Aberfoyle grew into the third largest source of slate in Scotland. Production peaked in the 1930s, by which point its slate was being used for something far removed from rooftops: billiard tables aboard the ocean liner Queen Mary.
A village built twice over, by slate and by Scott
Walter Scott's 1810 poem The Lady of the Lake drew the first wave of visitors to the area, and in 1882 a branch railway was built specifically to serve the tourist trade it created. The line closed to passengers in 1951, and the quarries themselves shut in 1958, leaving tourism as the village's main trade today.
