Sweets in Edzell: A Walled Garden Carved in Stone, 1604

Edzell Castle is largely a ruin today, but the walled garden beside it survives as one of the most unusual in Scotland.

A castle built by the Lindsays

Edzell Castle was begun around 1520 by David Lindsay, 9th Earl of Crawford, and expanded by his son Sir David Lindsay, Lord Edzell, into the residence whose ruins still stand today. The family kept it as a home until the estate was sold in 1715.

The Pleasance

In 1604, Sir David Lindsay laid out a walled garden known as the Pleasance, a roughly 52 by 42 metre enclosure carved with heraldic and symbolic stone panels found nowhere else in Scotland. A summer house still stands at one corner, and the foundations of an old bath house survive at the other.

Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else

Edzell's history is built on castle ruins and a 17th-century garden, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the village come by delivery, the same as the rest of Angus and the UK.
