Only the Grade I-listed gatehouse survives, but it's famous for a reason — in 1683, Rye House was the setting for a plot to assassinate King Charles II, foiled only because a fire at Newmarket sent the King home early.
In the town centre itself, the Clock Tower — built in 1835 on the site of the old St Katharine's Chapel — is what's left of Hoddesdon's original Town Hall, and remains the landmark most associated with the high street today.
