Sweets in Huntly: The Square's Standing Stones and a Duke's Statue

Huntly's Square has lost most of its original stone circle to a 19th-century statue, but two of the Standing Stanes of Strathbogie are still set into the ground where they've stood for centuries — one of them carved with a worn Pictish horseshoe symbol.

A stone circle, a court, and a battle rendezvous

The two surviving stones in the Square are what's left of the Standing Stanes of Strathbogie, once a circle of six. A court was recorded as being held at the stones in 1557, and in 1594 they served as the rendezvous point for the Earls of Argyll, Huntly and Errol on the eve of the Battle of Glenlivet. All but three of the stones were cleared away in 1862 to make room for a large sandstone statue of the Duke of Richmond, which still dominates the Square today.

A fountain, a trust, and a market town's wealth

Nearby stands the John Robertson memorial fountain, erected in 1882 after the 19th-century bank agent set up a trust to provide for Huntly's poor; his widow gifted the monument to the town. The Square itself reflects the wealth Huntly built as a market centre in the 1700s, when its streets were redeveloped into the grid plan still recognisable today, with a Thursday market trading in cattle, grain, eggs and cheese.

Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
