Long before the railway or the A1, Wetherby's fortune was built on its position on the Great North Road, the principal coaching route linking London and Edinburgh. Coaches travelling that road needed to change horses and travellers needed food and a bed, and through the 18th and into the 19th century Wetherby filled that role, its town centre lined with coaching inns competing for trade. Several of those buildings survive today, repurposed but still recognisable. The coaching trade eventually declined with the arrival of the railways, but the town found a new draw in Wetherby Racecourse, which opened in 1891 and continues to host National Hunt racing to this day.
