Most "dairy-free chocolate" is a compromise — swap the milk chocolate for dark and call it done. Booja-Booja took a harder route: building an actual truffle, cream centre and all, with no dairy anywhere in it, more than two decades before dairy-free became a mainstream supermarket category.
Started in a Norfolk kitchen
Booja-Booja was founded in 1999 by Colin Mace, who began making truffles in his own kitchen in Norfolk with a simple goal: a genuinely luxurious chocolate truffle that happened to contain no dairy, rather than a "free-from" sweet that tasted like a compromise. More than 25 years on, the company has grown well beyond that kitchen, but it's still based and manufactured entirely in Norfolk.
Free-from by default, not as an afterthought
Every product Booja-Booja makes is dairy-free, gluten-free, soya-free, organic and vegan, and the brand carries the Vegan Society's endorsement logo. Rather than a dairy cream ganache, the truffle centres are built from organic, plant-based ingredients from the start — the whole product is designed around not using dairy, rather than having dairy engineered back out of a standard recipe. The approach has picked up a long list of industry awards over the years, including multiple Great Taste Awards and Free From Food Awards, though the exact running total varies depending on which source you check.
