Walnut Whip launched in 1910, made by Duncan's of Edinburgh at their Beaverhall Road factory — a Scottish confectioner whose whole business came to rest on this one product. The original whip was hand-piped by extrusion into a rubber mould with a dozen formers, which is part of why the shape has stayed so recognisable, and the walnut on top was often one that had been broken in handling rather than a perfect half, since whole halves were saved for elsewhere. Duncan's was acquired by Rowntree in 1927 but kept its own brand name running for decades afterwards. Today Walnut Whip is made by Nestlé Rowntree at their factory in Halifax, West Yorkshire, and is described as the oldest brand still active in the Nestlé Rowntree stable — well over a century after that first Edinburgh batch.
