Anthon Berg Chocolate Liqueurs: The Danish Brand's Boozy Speciality

Anthon Berg has been shaping real spirits into miniature chocolate bottles since the 1940s, using a sugar-crystallisation trick that lets a solid shell hold a genuinely liquid centre.

From Copenhagen greengrocer to royal chocolatier

The brand began in 1884, when Anthon Berg, a Copenhagen greengrocer, opened a small confectionery shop on the Old Strand and put his own name above the door. His early speciality was marzipan, and combining it with chocolate — an unusual pairing at the time — became the house style that built the company's reputation across Denmark.

  • 1884 — Anthon Berg opens his first shop in Copenhagen.
  • 1957 — awarded the title "Purveyor to the Royal Danish Court".
  • Today — sold in more than 80 countries.

How a liquid centre survives inside a chocolate shell

Chocolate liqueurs use a technique confectioners call "cordial" moulding. Spirit is blended into hot sugar syrup and poured into bottle-shaped starch impressions. As the mixture cools, sugar at the outer edge crystallises into a thin, solid crust while the inside stays liquid — the same principle behind traditional cherry liqueur creams. Once set, each shape is turned out of its mould and coated in chocolate, sealing the spirit inside a shell it can't escape.

Part of a much bigger Danish confectionery group

Anthon Berg merged with fellow Danish chocolatier Galle & Jessen in 1970 to form what's now Toms Group, one of Scandinavia's largest confectionery producers. The liqueur-filled range has stayed the brand's signature product ever since, sitting alongside its marzipan pigs as a fixture of Danish Christmas tables.

Frequently asked questions

What are Anthon Berg chocolate liqueurs?

They're miniature chocolate-covered bottles filled with real spirits — rum, whisky, amaretto and more — made by the Danish confectioner Anthon Berg, a brand founded in Copenhagen in 1884.

How is liquid alcohol sealed inside a chocolate shell?

The liqueur is mixed with hot sugar syrup and poured into a starch mould shaped like a bottle. As it cools, a thin crust of sugar crystallises around the outside while the centre stays liquid, and the moulded shape is then dipped in chocolate.

How old is the Anthon Berg brand?

Anthon Berg was founded in 1884 by a Copenhagen greengrocer of the same name, and was awarded the title of Purveyor to the Royal Danish Court in 1957.
