A church from around 685
The earliest evidence of Saxon occupation of Frome is a church built by St Aldhelm around 685. In 701 a papal bull from Pope Sergius I gave him permission to establish a monastery in the town.
Weavers' workshops and cottages
The Sheppard family built workshops for weavers along Sheppard's Barton between 1700 and 1840, with their cottages on the opposite side of the street, and many of the old weavers' cottages and mills still stand today.
