A vow to build in stone
Earl Rognvald vowed to build a stone church in Kirkwall more magnificent than any other in the land, in honour of his uncle Magnus Erlendsson, Earl of Orkney, who had been martyred. Construction began in 1137 and continued over the next 300 years.
Red sandstone and Romanesque
The cathedral is built of local red sandstone in a mostly Romanesque style. It is described as the only wholly medieval cathedral in Scotland, and the bones of the saint are interred within the pillars of the choir.
