Early maps show a maypole standing on the site since the 1620s. It remains the focus of the town's May Day celebrations and fair, with ribbons and a crowned King and Queen.
A legend about a ship's mast
According to tradition, the first maypole was a ship's mast given to the people of Holywood in gratitude by Dutch traders who were shipwrecked nearby and helped by the townspeople. The top section fell in February 2021 after storms and was soon restored.
