Fizzers were among the earliest compressed fizzy sweets on the market - small, hard tablets that fizz and dissolve on the tongue, in the same broad family as Smarties-shaped discs rather than the chewier, filled style of sweet.
Hand-packed before the war
Right up until the Second World War, Fizzers were packed by hand, tablet by tablet. It was only as demand grew that Swizzels moved to roll-wrapping the tablets by machine - the format that's carried through to the rolls sold today.
Fizzers vs Refreshers vs Love Hearts
Swizzels makes several fizzy sweets that get mixed up, but they're built differently. Fizzers are firm, compressed tablets. Refreshers are softer, chewy sweets built around a sherbet centre. Love Hearts are compressed tablets too, but built around printed messages rather than pure fizz. All three lean on the same basic chemistry - an acid and a bicarbonate that react on your tongue to release carbon dioxide, which is what creates the fizzing sensation.
