Amlwch's identity was shaped by what lay beneath Parys Mountain, just outside the town, and for a few decades in the 18th century, that made it one of the most important industrial sites on earth.
A mountain of copper, mined since the Bronze Age
Parys Mountain has prehistoric underground workings confirmed by carbon dating, but it was a rich seam found on 2 March 1768, by local miner Rowland Puw, that triggered the real boom. The mine peaked in the 1780s as likely the world's largest copper mine, and between 1788 and 1805 around three million tons of ore was extracted, enough to produce 130,000 tons of copper.
The Copper King, and a town built on the trade
Thomas Williams, known as the "Copper King," led the Parys Mine Company from 1774 and grew Amlwch into a major port and shipbuilding town to move the ore. Mining continued until around 1904, when rising costs finally ended large-scale operations.
