Sweets in Moy: A Corner of Italy, Transplanted to Tyrone

Moy, straddling the County Tyrone and County Armagh border, has a market square that looks nothing like the rest of Ulster — because it was never meant to.

An earl's Grand Tour, brought home as a village

Moy was laid out in the 1760s for James Caulfeild, 1st Earl of Charlemont, who spent nine years travelling Europe on his Grand Tour between 1746 and 1755 and developed a lasting taste for Italianate design. Passing through Bosco Marengo in Lombardy, he was taken enough with its piazza to model Moy's own market square on it once he returned home to commission the village.

A square still unlike anywhere else in Ulster

The result is a formal rectangular market place lined with lawns and horse-chestnut trees, a world away from the typical layout of an Ulster market town. It's earned Moy a lasting description as a corner of Italy transplanted into Tyrone, a reputation the village still trades on today.

Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else

Moy's fame rests on an earl's taste in architecture, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the village come by delivery, the same as the rest of County Tyrone and the UK.
