Coalisland, in County Tyrone, is named for exactly what it sounds like — one of the few places in Ireland where coal was ever mined in any real quantity.
A coalfield that gave the town its name
Coal mining in the area is recorded as early as the 1654 Civil Survey, with further deposits found at Drumglass in 1692. In 1723, entrepreneur Francis Seymour leased land at Brackaville, soon renamed Coalisland, and sank an 'Engine Pit' some 156 feet deep to work the seam by more sophisticated methods than had been used before.
A canal built purely to move the coal
To get that coal to market, construction began on the Coalisland Canal in 1733, though it wasn't officially opened until 1787, eventually linking the mines to Lough Neagh and from there towards Dublin. A further extension, Dukart's Canal, was built in 1777 using inclined planes instead of locks, though it never worked reliably and was dismantled within a decade.
