Fivemiletown, in County Tyrone, has one of the most literally descriptive place names in Northern Ireland — and it wasn't even the village's first name.
Mount Stewart, then Blessingbourne, then Fivemiletown
The village was laid out as a planned settlement in 1619 by Sir William Stewart, who called it Mount Stewart, long before it carried an older Irish name, Baile na Lorgan, meaning townland of the long ridge. It later went by Blessingbourne before eventually settling on Fivemiletown, a name taken simply from its distance, in old Irish miles, from Clogher, Brookeborough and Tempo.
A creamery that outlasted the name changes
Since 1898, the village has been home to Fivemiletown Creamery, founded as a farmers' cooperative originally making butter and milk. It now produces cheeses sold across Britain and Ireland and exported to Europe and North America, making it one of the longest-running businesses to carry the town's name.
Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
Fivemiletown's story is one of surveyors and creameries, not confectioners — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the village come by delivery, the same as the rest of County Tyrone and the UK.
