Bangor, on the south shore of Belfast Lough, has been a religious centre, a linen and cotton town, and a Victorian seaside resort — and today it's best known for the swans on its seafront.
From monastery to mill town
In the 6th and 7th centuries, Bangor's monastery rivalled Armagh as Ireland's religious and cultural centre, until Viking raids brought that era to an end. The town stayed small until the Ulster Plantations of the 17th century, after which a cotton and linen industry grew along the seafront, with steam-driven mills lining the shore.
A seaside resort, and its famous swans
The railway reached Bangor in 1865, turning the town into a seaside resort and a commuter base for Belfast. Its seafront swimming pool, Pickie Pool, opened in 1937 and drew visitors from across the country before closing in the 1980s; the site reopened as Pickie Fun Park, now known for its giant swan pedalos and miniature train.
