Bearsden is a quiet Glasgow suburb today, but in around 142 AD it sat on the northern frontier of the Roman Empire.
A Roman Bathhouse on the Antonine Wall
The Antonine Wall ran coast to coast across central Scotland, from the Clyde to the Forth, built around 142 AD as the most northerly frontier the Roman army ever held — and abandoned again within about 20 years. A fort once stood at Bearsden, now mostly built over by roads and houses, but the bathhouse and latrine in its annexe survive remarkably well. Builders uncovered the remains in 1973, along with a carved stone head, a gaming board and an inscribed building stone left by the Twentieth Legion.
Bearsden Today
These days Bearsden is one of Glasgow's more affluent commuter suburbs, built up around Bearsden Cross with little sign of its Roman past beyond the preserved bathhouse itself — a striking contrast for a town otherwise known for leafy streets and Victorian villas.
What Bearsden Doesn't Stock
