Blaenavon's industrial landscape is so historically important that UNESCO made it a World Heritage Site in 2000, built almost entirely around one ironworks.
One of the biggest ironworks in the world
Blaenavon Ironworks operated from 1789 to 1902 and, with three blast furnaces and steam power, was at the cutting edge of iron production and one of the biggest ironworks anywhere in the world at the time. It's now regarded as the best-preserved 18th-century ironworks in existence, with six blast furnaces, a casting house and a water balance tower still standing.
A discovery that changed steelmaking
Blaenavon is also where Sidney Gilchrist Thomas's process for making steel from phosphoric iron ore was developed, a breakthrough that underpinned global steel production into the 1960s. Iron and coal from Blaenavon and the surrounding Welsh valleys went on to build railways and factories on five continents.
