A town that took its name from the wrong village
Film production first arrived in the area in 1914, when Neptune Studios opened in Borehamwood. More studios followed through the 1920s, and when a new one was built in 1925 it was named Elstree Studios — after the more established neighbouring village, even though the studio itself was in Borehamwood. The name stuck, and 'Elstree Studios' became a generic term for the whole cluster of studios that grew up around the town.
That cluster went on to host some of the biggest productions in film and television history — The Shining, the Star Wars saga and the Indiana Jones films were all made wholly or partly here, alongside TV shows like Big Brother, Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing on Ice.
