From motte-and-bailey to market town
Builth Wells began as a timber motte-and-bailey castle built by the Norman lord Philip de Braose at a crossing point on the River Wye, later rebuilt in stone by Edward I in the late 13th century, who also granted the town its market charter in 1278. The town later reinvented itself as a small spa resort in the 19th century, after mineral springs were discovered at Park Wells and Glanne Wells.
Wales' biggest agricultural show
As the spa trade faded, Builth turned to agriculture, opening its first dedicated livestock market in 1910. In 1963 the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society — formed in 1904 — made the Royal Welsh Showground at nearby Llanelwedd its permanent home, and the four-day show now brings around 250,000 visitors from across Wales and beyond every July.
