The Mussenden Temple was built in 1783 by Frederick Hervey, the Bishop of Derry and 4th Earl of Bristol, as a library and retreat for his niece Frideswide Mussenden. It sits on a cliff roughly 120ft above the Atlantic, its design inspired by the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli, near Rome, which Hervey had seen on his travels.
From grand estate to National Trust ruin
The temple was part of the wider Downhill Demesne, the Bishop's estate, which suffered a major fire in 1851 and was later used to billet RAF personnel during the Second World War before falling into disrepair. The National Trust took on the site in 1980 and carried out cliff stabilisation work in 1997 to keep the temple from following the rest of the house into the sea.
