Clydebank built some of the largest ships the world had ever seen, and the crane that lifted their engines into place is still standing on the riverbank.
The Titan Crane and John Brown's Shipyard
The John Brown & Company shipyard, established on the Clyde at Clydebank in 1871, built the Queen Mary, the Queen Elizabeth, the QE2 and the Royal Yacht Britannia. Towering over the yard is the Titan Crane, completed in 1907 — the world's first electrically powered cantilever crane, and at 46 metres high, the largest of its kind when it was built. It's still there today, a rare survivor of Clydebank's shipbuilding age.
The Singer Factory
Just as significant to the town was the Singer sewing machine factory, which once stood opposite where Clydebank Shopping Centre is today and was, at its peak, the largest employer in the area after the shipyards themselves. Much of the surrounding housing was destroyed in the Clydebank Blitz of 1941, and the bombed-out remains were eventually cleared to make way for the shopping centre, completed at the end of the 1970s.
What a Shipyard Town's Shopping Centre Doesn't Stock
Clydebank Shopping Centre covers the everyday shopping, but bulk bags, vegan-specific ranges and halal-friendly sweets aren't something a general retail centre carries — that gap is what sends most local orders online.
