Coatbridge's population is around 44,000, and its biggest visitor attraction is a museum built on the site of the ironworks that once defined the town.
Summerlee, and Scotland's Only Working Edwardian Tram
Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life sits on the site of the old Summerlee ironworks and covers Lanarkshire's engineering, mining, steelworking and weaving history, alongside the lives of the people who worked in it. Outside, it operates the only working Edwardian tram in Scotland, plus a coal mine and reconstructed miners' rows with interiors spanning the 1840s to the 1980s — a genuinely unusual set of exhibits for a town of this size.
The Time Capsule, Not a Sweet Shop
Coatbridge is also home to The Time Capsule, a leisure complex combining a waterpark and ice rink, complete with the Storm Chasers flumes and a Tsunami wave pool. It draws visitors from across Lanarkshire — but it's a day out, not a source of bulk confectionery.
What the Museum and Leisure Centre Don't Stock
Between an industrial heritage museum and a waterpark, there's plenty to do in Coatbridge — just nowhere set up to sell 3kg bulk bags, vegan-specific ranges or trade cases for an event.
