Durham's built-up area was home to 50,510 people at the 2021 Census, a compact cathedral city built around its river loop and market place.
The Indoor Market, open since 1851
Durham's market rights go back to 1179, when Bishop Hugh Pudsey granted the city charter rights for two weekly markets — one of the older documented market charters in the North East. The covered hall traders use today came much later: designed by Sydney Smirke, the architect behind the British Museum's Reading Room, it opened on 19 December 1851 after three years of construction, and is still run by Durham Markets Company, one of only a handful of privately owned markets left in the UK.
Following a 1996 restoration, the hall now holds more than 50 traders across butchers, greengrocers, and general stalls, open Monday to Saturday. It's a genuine working market with nearly two centuries under one roof, not a heritage-only attraction.
What the market doesn't stock
A market built around individual counters and stalls isn't set up for a 3kg bulk bag, a vegan-specific range, or a halal-friendly selection put together for a business order. That's a different kind of buying than a Saturday trip to the hall.
Why Durham shoppers order online anyway
For anything past a market-stall bag, ordering online and having it delivered is the more consistent option — no trip into the city centre required, and no limit on how much you're buying at once.
