Draperstown, in County Londonderry, carries the name of a London trade guild that had no presence here until the 17th-century Plantation of Ulster changed that.
Land granted to a City of London company
During the Plantation of Ulster, the Worshipful Company of Drapers, one of the historic livery companies of the City of London, was granted estates around Moneymore and the settlement then known as The Cross, in what is now mid-Ulster. The Company held the land for generations, funding local infrastructure as its tenants farmed it.
Renamed and rebuilt in 1818
In 1818, the Company undertook a major building programme, putting up a market house, hotel and dispensary for its tenants, and the settlement's name changed from The Cross to Draperstown to mark the Company's role in rebuilding it. The result was a planned triangular market space flanked by sandstone and slate terraces, laid out deliberately rather than growing up by accident.
