Sweets in Gravesend: The Borough Market's Century-Old Sweet Stall, and the Chocolate Empire It Built

Gravesend's built-up area had a population of 58,105 at the 2021 census, the main town in the borough of Gravesham on the south bank of the Thames Estuary.

The Borough Market's sweet stall

Gravesend's Borough Market has been trading since 1268, when Henry III granted a charter to Robert de la Parrock of Parrock Manor — one of the oldest market charters in Kent. The market building seen today was largely rebuilt towards the end of the 19th century and formally opened on 18 December 1898, and it's still at the centre of the town.

One family's stall there ran for more than a century: from a great-grandfather, through a grandfather and father, to a brother who kept it going until his death in 2005. A daughter of that family worked the stall from the age of eight, and later recalled sweets being "the last thing to come off ration in the 1950s, so people used to queue up for them." A relation who met his future wife at that same stall went on to manage one of Europe's biggest sweet factories, employing around 1,000 staff.

What a market stall never covered

A hundred years of trading at a single stall is a genuinely good story, but it was still a stall — built for a bag sold in person, not a bulk order. A vegan-specific range, a halal-friendly selection, or a trade case for a wedding or business was never what a market pitch like that was set up to hold.

Why Gravesend shoppers order online anyway

For anything past a market-day bag, ordering online and having it delivered is the steadier route now — no trip to the Borough Market required, and no limit on the quantity either.
