King Haakon IV of Norway brought a fleet of up to 200 ships into the Firth of Clyde to assert control over the Western Isles. A violent autumn storm drove several vessels ashore near Largs, and the scrappy battle that followed on 2 October 1263 was largely inconclusive on the day — but it marked the end of serious Norwegian ambitions on the Scottish mainland.
A treaty that redrew the map
In the aftermath, King Alexander III negotiated the Treaty of Perth with Haakon's successor, handing the Western Isles and the Isle of Man back to Scottish control. Largs now marks the event with an annual Viking Festival and a striking seafront monument, the Pencil, overlooking the water where it happened.
