Leyland was a quiet agricultural settlement until the end of the 19th century, when it grew rapidly around a vehicle manufacturer that would eventually carry the town's name worldwide. In 1896, the Sumner and Spurrier families founded the Lancashire Steam Motor Company, which became Leyland Motors — for the best part of a century, one of the largest lorry and bus manufacturers in the world, supplying Britain's roads, armed forces and colonies.
That history is preserved at the British Commercial Vehicle Museum on King Street, established in 1983 inside the original 1930s inspection building of Leyland Motors. It holds the largest collection of historic commercial vehicles in Europe — more than 60 lorries, buses, vans, fire engines and military vehicles, including the 'Pope-mobile' built for Pope John Paul II's 1982 visit to Britain.
