Monifieth's history runs far deeper than its Victorian jute-era growth suggests, with carved stones in the town pointing back to the early medieval period.
An ecclesiastical centre carved in stone
The settlement's name appears in ancient records as Moniefuith or Monefuit, Celtic for “the moss of the stag,” and dates back to at least the 9th century. A number of Class II and III Pictish stones found in Monifieth point to it having been an ecclesiastical centre of real importance in the early medieval period, when its lands belonged to the Celi De monastic order before passing to the Tironensian monks of Arbroath Abbey in the early 13th century.
From jute boom to golfing town
Monifieth remained a small village until the early 19th century, when it grew rapidly on the back of the local textile industry, prospering alongside neighbouring Broughty Ferry during Dundee's jute boom. Today the town is known as a golfing centre, with its links course used as a qualifying venue for the Open Championship.
