Nantwich, in Cheshire, had a population of around 20,000 — a market town whose centre still looks much as it did after two very different 17th-century upheavals.
Rebuilt after fire, besieged in war
In December 1583, a major fire tore through Nantwich and destroyed a large part of the town. It was rebuilt substantially in timber-framed black-and-white style, and tradition holds that Queen Elizabeth I contributed timber from royal forests towards the rebuilding — whatever the exact scale of her involvement, the result is the cluster of Tudor buildings, including Churche's Mansion, that still define Nantwich's town centre.
Six decades later, in January 1644, Nantwich was besieged by Royalist forces during the Civil War. The siege was lifted when a Parliamentarian relief force broke through, and the town still marks the anniversary each year as 'Holly Holy Day', named for the sprigs of holly soldiers reportedly wore in their hats to celebrate.
What that history doesn't leave behind
Nantwich's Tudor streets are well preserved, but there's no dedicated sweet shop or wholesale supplier in town — for bulk bags, pick 'n' mix by the kilo, or vegan and halal-friendly ranges, there's nowhere local set up for it.
Why Nantwich shoppers order online anyway
For anything bought in bulk, ordering online and having it delivered is simpler than relying on a historic high street built for browsing rather than stocking up.
