Newton Stewart was built to a plan from the very start — and nearly three centuries later, its streets and surroundings ended up on cinema screens around the world.
A town laid out by design
Newton Stewart was built as a planned town by the Stewart family in 1677, and grew quickly: by 1685 it had already overtaken the neighbouring village of Minnigaff in size and importance. Its "New Town of Stewart" charter from King Charles II granted burgh status, along with a weekly market and two annual fairs.
The town that became The Wicker Man
In 1973, the folk-horror film The Wicker Man was shot almost entirely on location in and around Newton Stewart, and it had its premiere at the town's own cinema. The film has since become a cult classic, and the surrounding Galloway countryside it captured still draws fans to this day.
Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
Newton Stewart's history is built on planned streets and film locations, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of Dumfries and Galloway and the UK.
