A town built on salt
Northwich sits on one of Britain's richest natural deposits of rock salt, and from the 19th century the town grew around brine pumping and salt production on a large scale. The trade brought prosperity, but pumping brine out of the ground caused the land above it to subside unpredictably, and older buildings in the town centre were often built using lightweight timber frames on brick or concrete rafts, specifically so they could be jacked back up level if the ground beneath them dropped.
The same subsidence problem shaped the town's river crossings: Northwich's electrically powered lift bridges, including Hayhurst Bridge and Town Bridge, were built around the turn of the 20th century to let the roadway be raised out of the way of river traffic and adjusted as the ground shifted, and they're recognised as among the earliest bridges of their kind anywhere. Both are still in everyday use.
