After the 2001 foot-and-mouth outbreak hit visitor numbers, local people formed the Sedbergh Literary Trust and launched the Sedbergh Booktown project. Sedbergh was declared England's official Book Town in 2003, and was formally recognised by the International Organisation of Book Towns in 2006 — one of only three Book Towns in the UK, alongside Hay-on-Wye in Wales and Wigtown in Scotland. The town now has a cluster of secondhand bookshops and two annual festivals.
