Torquay takes its name from the quay the monks of Torre Abbey built for their fishing boats — "Tor Quay" — centuries before the town became a holiday destination during the Napoleonic Wars, when the Royal Navy's presence in Torbay first brought visitors and their families to the area. The Cary family, prominent Torquinians since buying the Torre Abbey estate in 1662, left their name across the town — Cary Parade, the Cary Arms, and Cary Park, laid out in 1897 to mark Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee.
