Maltesers

Maltesers were created by Forrest Mars Sr. in 1936 and went on sale in Britain in 1937 — originally marketed to women as "Energy Balls", a lighter chocolate treat rather than the honeycomb snack they're known as today. The centre isn't real honeycomb: it's an aerated sugar and malt mixture, the same confectionery technique behind cinder toffee, wrapped in a thin milk chocolate shell. Standard Maltesers are vegetarian — no gelatine, no animal-derived colouring — though not vegan, since they contain milk in several forms.
