Rowntree's had been selling loose "Chocolate Beans" since the 1880s, but a change in trading standards forced a rename in 1937 — Smarties Chocolate Beans was born, and the tube packaging that followed made the brand instantly recognisable. The UK still gets through more than 50 million tubes a year.
