Ask an Australian which chocolate bar they miss most while travelling and Caramello comes up more often than you'd expect for a bar that's barely known outside Australia and New Zealand. It's also one of the most confused Cadbury names, thanks to two very similarly named stablemates.
Made in Tasmania since 1922
Cadbury's Claremont factory in Hobart, Tasmania opened in 1922 and remains the company's main Australian chocolate manufacturing site. Caramello, like most of Cadbury's Australian block range, is made there — part of a manufacturing history that's now over a century old.
What's actually inside the bar
The name suggests caramel pieces, but that's not quite right. Cadbury Dairy Milk Caramello is Dairy Milk milk chocolate with a smooth, continuous caramel filling running through the centre of the bar, closer in construction to a filled bar than a bar with mix-ins. That's a meaningful difference for anyone expecting the chewier, more scattered caramel texture of something like a Twix or a Rolo.
Caramello, Caramello Koala and Caramilk — three different things
Australia has three Cadbury products with overlapping names and it's worth being clear about which is which:
- Caramello — the block bar covered above: Dairy Milk chocolate with a caramel filling.
- Caramello Koala — introduced in 1966, an individually wrapped, koala-shaped chocolate with a caramel centre. Smaller, shaped, and sold as a single-serve treat rather than a sharing block.
- Caramilk — a completely different product: a caramelised "blonde" white chocolate, first sold in 1968, discontinued in 1994, and revived from 2018 onwards after strong demand for its return. It contains no caramel filling at all — the caramel flavour comes from slow-cooking the white chocolate itself.
The closest thing in the UK
Caramello isn't sold under that name in the UK, but the concept translates directly: Cadbury Dairy Milk Caramel is a UK block bar built on the same idea — Dairy Milk chocolate with a caramel filling running through it.
