Confectionery Cash and Carry: What It Is, and Whether You Still Need One

"Cash and carry" is a specific trade model, not just a general term for buying in bulk: a warehouse you join as a member, pay for goods at the till, and carry out yourself. For confectionery, that model is how a lot of independent shops, market stalls and caterers have stocked up for decades. It's also increasingly optional, which is worth knowing before you go to the trouble of signing up for a membership.

How a cash and carry actually works

The model is built around three things: membership, a physical warehouse, and self-collection. You register as a trade customer (often needing to show you run a business), drive to the depot, pick goods off pallet-height shelving, and pay at a till on the way out — no delivery, no invoice terms, no minimum order beyond what the warehouse sets informally. For decades this was close to the only way a small independent sweet shop or market stall could get case-quantity pricing on big-name confectionery.

What's changed

Online wholesale ordering does most of the same job without the warehouse visit. We already cover the general case for buying sweets wholesale in our guide to buying sweets wholesale and in bulk, and our separate piece on what we actually cover under "wholesale snacks" — cash and carry is really the older, in-person version of the same transaction. The case packs themselves look near-identical to what you'd find on a cash and carry shelf: multipacks sold by the full case rather than the single bar, like Cadbury Dairy Milk 4-Packs, Case of 14 or KitKat 4 Finger Multipacks, Case of 20.

Where cash and carry still wins

At genuinely large volumes — multiple pallets, not a handful of cases — a cash and carry's bulk pricing can still beat anything delivered to your door, and some buyers simply prefer to see and handle stock before paying. If you're running a large operation with the vehicle capacity to collect pallet loads regularly, a trade membership is still worth having.

Where online wholesale wins

For most independent shops, stalls and caterers, the maths tends to go the other way once you count fuel, time and the minimum spend many warehouses quietly expect. Ordering wholesale case packs online — whether that's Kinnerton Milk Chocolate Lollipops, Case of 27 for a pick 'n' mix counter or a case of chocolate bars for a till-point display — gets you the same per-case pricing delivered, with no membership application and no minimum basket to hit before you're allowed to pay.
