The Brand Behind the Shells: Guylian
Guylian was founded in 1958 in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium, by Guy Foubert and his wife Liliane — the brand name itself is a combination of the two of their first names. The seashell idea came in the 1960s: Liliane designed the moulds for the various shell shapes and perfected the marbled effect by blending white and dark chocolate, while Guy developed the hazelnut praline filling that became the brand's signature. What started as a home-based operation moved into a dedicated factory in 1985 as demand grew, and the brand is now part of the South Korean confectionery group Lotte.
