Standard gelatine is very commonly derived from pork, which makes it haram — and pork-derived gelatine is used across a large share of mainstream British confectionery, including some well-known brands, without it always being obvious from the front of pack.
What makes an alternative acceptable
There are two main routes manufacturers take to make a sweet halal-friendly: beef gelatine from animals slaughtered according to Islamic requirements, or plant-based alternatives such as starch, pectin, or agar-agar (derived from seaweed) which are naturally halal and also commonly used in vegetarian and vegan sweets. Halal-certified products will typically say "beef gelatine" on the ingredients list or carry a mark from a recognised certification body such as the Halal Food Authority.
