Love Hearts Guide: What We Stock & Their History

Love Hearts are one of Swizzels' longest-running lines, and we stock a genuine spread of the range — from the bulk mini roll format to the novelty lipstick case — all well stocked at the time of writing.

Swizzels Love Hearts Mini Rolls

The bulk format: Swizzels Love Hearts Mini Rolls 3kg, fruit-flavoured fizzy pressed sweets stamped with the classic messages, sold as a 3kg bag rather than individually wrapped rolls. No gelatine, and labelled suitable for vegans.

Swizzels Love Heart Rolls

The classic individually wrapped format, sized for pocket-money resale: Swizzels Love Heart Rolls 39g — Case of 24. Same fizzy pressed recipe as the mini rolls, just packaged as 24 separate 39g rolls per case rather than loose in a bulk bag.

Swizzels Love Hearts Candy Lipsticks

A novelty format built on the same recipe: Swizzels Love Hearts Candy Lipsticks — Case of 60, fruit-flavoured pressed sweets moulded into a plastic lipstick case. It's a long-running novelty line in its own right, sold here as a case of 60.

The Brand Behind Love Hearts

Love Hearts were invented in 1954 by David Dee at Swizzels, and started life as a Christmas cracker filler rather than a standalone sweet — they were originally stamped with just one message, "I LOVE YOU", before Swizzels expanded into the wider set of phrases people now associate with the sweet (a few early ones, like "Hey Daddio", didn't survive past the 1960s). They proved popular enough at Christmas that Swizzels decided to sell them year-round, and the process for embossing each sweet with its message in edible ink has remained a closely guarded company secret ever since. Swizzels itself traces back to 1928, when brothers Alfred and Maurice Matlow set up a small jelly-sweet factory in London before joining David Dee to found Swizzels; wartime bombing forced a move to New Mills, Derbyshire, in 1940, where the company — renamed Swizzels Matlow in 1975 — still makes Love Hearts today.
