The slimming aid that became a chocolate classic
Maltesers weren't launched as an indulgence. Forrest Mars Sr. developed and launched them from the Mars factory in Slough in 1936–37, and the original marketing pitched them as "energy balls" aimed squarely at diet-conscious women — adverts of the era claimed the malted milk centre was far less fattening, gram for gram, than ordinary solid chocolate. That framing didn't survive into the modern era, but the product itself — a malted honeycomb centre in a thin milk chocolate shell, light enough that a handful feels less indulgent than a solid bar — hasn't fundamentally changed since.
