The Brand Behind M&M's
M&M's dates back to the late 1930s, when Forrest Mars Sr. saw soldiers in the Spanish Civil War eating Smarties — a British sweet with a hard sugar shell that stopped the chocolate inside from melting — and set out to make an American version. He patented his own process in 1941 and went into business with Bruce Murrie, son of the Hershey Chocolate Company president; the two surnames, Mars and Murrie, gave the sweet its name, and the arrangement let the new candy use Hershey's chocolate at a time when Hershey controlled rationed supply in the US. During the Second World War, M&M's were sold exclusively to the military, prized for being heat-resistant and easy to carry in soldiers' rations — the same shell that inspired the whole idea in the first place.
