Families and, especially, young people working away from home in service were expected to return to their "mother church," the main church or cathedral of the area they grew up in, rather than to their actual mother.
Because it was one of the few days servants and apprentices were given off, it naturally turned into the one reliable chance for a family reunion, and the focus drifted from the mother church to the mother at home. Even though it sat inside Lent, when fasting was expected, the rules were relaxed for the day: workers picked flowers on the walk home, and households baked a Simnel cake, "mothering buns," or a fig pie as an edible treat. By the 1950s, the older religious meaning had faded into the background and Mothering Sunday had become the largely secular occasion it is now — cards, flowers, and, increasingly, boxed chocolate, sitting alongside the older baked traditions rather than replacing them entirely.
