Munchies vs Rolos: Two Toffee-Centre Chocolates Compared

Munchies and Rolos both put a soft, sweet centre inside a milk chocolate shell, and both come from the Rowntree Mackintosh family tree that's now part of Nestle. But they're built - and eaten - very differently.

Munchies: a handful of mixed textures

Mackintosh's launched Munchies in 1957. Each piece is a small milk chocolate cube built around a soft, buttery caramel and a crisp biscuit piece, so every bite has three textures going on rather than one. They're sold loose in a bag or tube, meant for grabbing a few at a time rather than rationing them out individually.

Rolos: one toffee cup at a time

Rolo is the older of the two, launched by Rowntree's in 1937. The format is the whole point: individually wrapped chocolate cups stacked in a tube, each one hiding a single soft toffee centre. The tube format turned Rolo into one of the few sweets built around a ritual - working down to the last one, which decades of UK advertising turned into a running joke about generosity.

Same heritage, different habit

Both ended up under Nestle after its 1988 purchase of Rowntree Mackintosh, the company that had already merged the Rowntree and Mackintosh ranges - including Rolo and Munchies - in 1969. But the eating experience stayed distinct: Munchies is a mixed-texture snack you eat by the handful, Rolo is a one-at-a-time toffee cup you work through a tube at a time.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between Munchies and Rolos?

Munchies are small milk chocolate cubes with a soft caramel centre and a crisp biscuit piece, meant to be eaten as a handful. Rolos are individually wrapped chocolate cups, each hiding a single soft toffee centre, traditionally eaten one at a time from a tube.

Which came first, Munchies or Rolos?

Rolo, by 20 years. Rowntree's launched Rolo in 1937. Munchies followed in 1957, launched by Mackintosh's.

Are Munchies and Rolos made by the same company?

They are now. Both brands ended up with Nestle after its 1988 takeover of Rowntree Mackintosh, which had already brought the two companies' sweet lines - including Rolo and Munchies - together the previous decade.

Does Supreme Sweets stock both?

Yes - we carry Munchies as a sharing bag and a tube, and Rolo as tubes, multipacks and the smaller Little Rolo sharing bag.
